NFA, SAN MIGUEL LGU FORGE PARTNERSHIP FOR RICE PROCESSING CENTER UNDER THE MAFIM PROGRAM
July 16, 2025 - Strengthening the collaboration between local government and national agencies in the pursuit of food security, San Miguel Mayor Ian Gil Mendez recently met with officials headed by Special Assistant to the Administrator, Atty. Bernie G. Fondevilla to discuss the donation of a local government-owned lot for the establishment of a Rice Processing Center (RPC) in the municipality.
The initiative is part of the Masagana Agri-Food Infrastructure Modernization Program (MAFIM) — a nationwide program of the NFA aimed at modernizing agricultural infrastructure and empowering rice-producing communities. Mayor Mendez emphasized the vital role of LGUs in achieving the NFA's mandate to ensure rice availability, accessibility, and affordability for all Filipinos.
He expressed full support for the establishment of the RPC, citing its potential to improve local rice production, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase the income of farmers. “The local government of San Miguel is committed to supporting national food programs that benefit our constituents. Through this partnership with the NFA, we hope to create sustainable solutions for our farmers,” Mayor Mendez said. NFA officials commended the mayor's proactive leadership and reiterated their commitment to working closely with LGUs to bring modern and efficient food facilities closer to rural areas.
The proposed Rice Processing Center is expected to serve as a hub for rice milling, drying, and storage — ensuring quality rice output and better farmgate prices for local producers. With the initial discussions underway, both parties are set to proceed with site evaluations, technical planning, and necessary documentation to formalize the land donation and begin the implementation phase of the project.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone under the MAFIM Program, reflecting a shared vision of empowering communities through resilient, farmer-focused infrastructure.
